How long do I have to make an accident claim in the UK?

15.04.2024

Act quickly! There are strict time limits for filing accident claims and these vary depending on the type of accident:

  • Road traffic accidents: Three years from the date of the accident, or three years from discovering your injuries were linked to it.
  • Accidents at work: Usually three years from when you became aware that your injury was work-related.
  • Medical negligence: Three years from the incident, or three years from realising the negligence caused your injury.
  • Incidents involving children: Time limits might be extended. If a child's been injured, you usually have until their 21st birthday to pursue a claim.
  • Lack of mental capacity: If the injured person isn't able to manage their own claim due to their injuries, the time limit might not apply.
