Victims of violent crime
The government takes the prevention of physical violence in the UK very seriously by increasing the number of police officers and by installing surveillance cameras, however, such incidents are still far from being rare.
If you have been injured as a result of a violent crime, you have the right to claim compensation.
The amount of compensation is determined on the basis of victim’s injuries, whether physical, psychological or a combination, ranging from £1,000 to £500,000.
The government has created an executive agency called The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) which is responsible to award compensations to victims of crime.
Cases accepted by CICA for consideration include:
- Assaults, physical attacks and beatings
- Rape and other crimes of a sexual nature
- Animal attacks (only in cases of baiting and blatant disregard for public safety)
- Crimes involving the use of a vehicle, where the vehicle is used with intent to cause injury to a person
- Psychological trauma, wherein you witnessed an attack which caused your loved one’s suffering
- A claim pursued by the relatives of a person who died as a result of unlawful actions by the third parties.
CICA determines the amount awarded for compensation in accordance with their scheme and a designated tariff known as the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
The main criteria which determine your eligibility to use this scheme is:
- Reporting the incident to the police as soon as reasonably practicable
- Any unreasonable delay may lead to your claim being rejected
- Your injuries meet a minimum remuneration of 1,000 GBP
- Our lawyer will be able to make a preliminary assessment when you contact it happens.
- The incident occurred within the past two years
- In cases of sexual assault or abuse, the time limit may be extended.
- The incident occurred in England, Scotland or Wales.
If your case meets the criteria for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, the compensation will be awarded in accordance with a set tariff based on the type of the injuries sustained.
Examples of awards available under the scheme are set as follows:
- Fractured jaw bone – 1,500 GBP
- Loss of a front tooth – 1,500 GBP
- Scars on the face (serious disfigurement) – 11,000 GBP
- Serious damage to vision – 13,500 GBP
- Severe brain damage – 175,000 GBP

Incidents involving children
Childhood is a time for new discoveries, exciting events and unfortunately common childhood traumas. Whether it’s playing games, walking in the fresh air or testing one’s capabilities.
However, quite often, children are injured as a result of the adults’ negligence or due to the lack of adequate safety measures. Such cases can become a challenge for the whole family and have long-term consequences for the child’s life and health.
If you find yourself in a situation where your child was injured due to someone’s negligence or oversight, you can file a claim and receive fair compensation.
We can help in cases when your child has been injured:
- At school, college or nursery (including school trips)
- In road traffic accidents
- In accidents in public places (such as supermarkets, shopping centres, parks and playgrounds)
- As a result of medical negligence
By law, a child under the age of 18 does not have the right to file a compensation claim independently. An adult must represent their interests. In the British legal system, the child’s representative is called Litigation Friend. Usually, this is one of their parents or a close relative.
A minor’s injury claim can be filed at any time after the accident, but no later than the date the child turns 21. Upon reaching the age of 18, the child has the right to make such a decision independently and retains this right until the age of 21.
Compensation for child injuries can be obtained either through an agreement between the Third-Party Insurance and the child’s legal representative or by Court approval.
When the case is settled on the basis of Parental Indemnity, parents will receive compensation which should be used for child’s benefit.
If the Defendants refuse to settle the claim through an agreement, the case goes to Court. At a hearing trial, which usually lasts no more than one hour, the judge will review the case to ensure that the amount of compensation agreed between parties fairly reflects the child’s injuries.
If the Judge is satisfied and approves the settlement, the funds will be deposited at Court Funds Office with further possibility of transferring it into a child’s investment savings account (Child’s ISA). The child will have access to it upon reaching the age of 18.
The parents can apply for a ‘one off’ immediate payment for child’s current needs, for example, educational or medical purposes.
If you find yourself in a situation where your child has been injured due to someone’s negligence or oversight, you can file a claim to receive compensation.

Dog bites
According to the law, dog owners bear full responsibility for controlling their animal and preventing any dangerous situations for the public. If you were bitten by a dog, then this is classified as dog owner’s negligence who is obliged to control it at all times.
Such incidents can occur in parks and open spaces where the owners of the dogs release them from the leash, therefore, they can attack children, people walking peacefully or cyclists.
Postmen, couriers and deliverymen get bitten by dogs quite often.
Getting compensation for being injured as a result of a dog attack is a complicated process. To maximise your chances for a successful claim, please try the following:
- Inform the dog owner about the incident and ask for the dog’s insurance details. It is unlikely they will admit liability at this stage, but you should draw their attention to the fact that the dog attacked you.
- Take photos of the dog and the location where the incident occurred.
- If you were bitten by a dog while at work, you should immediately report this to your employer and ask them to record it in the Accident Report Book.
- Take photos of your injuries before bandaging the wound.
- Seek medical help. Even if the injury is not severe, you cannot avoid being vaccinated against tetanus and rabies.
- Find witnesses to the incident and request their contact details.
If you were injured as a result of a dog attack – you can receive compensation.
