Reflections on Car Insurance in the UK

Auto insurance

Most of the people I had to communicate by the nature of the service, if they are not afraid of Insurance Companies, then experience some strange feeling very similar to this. But it would seem, by purchasing insurance, we receive a number of guarantees in case suddenly, one day, everything goes wrong. In essence, we conclude an Agreement with an Insurance Company to solve the problems we will face due to car accidents. Where does this feeling come from? Let's try to figure it out ...

It should be recognized that the UK insurance market is the oldest in the world and has a well-deserved and indisputable authority. But the language used by insurance marketers is often misleading. Their main task is to hide the true meaning of the event - you buy insurance not for yourself (deep breath), but so that everyone who wants to file a claim against you has a guaranteed opportunity to receive compensation (you can breathe out). In other words, you are buying insurance for others who might be harmed by your actions. I think you will agree with me; with such wording, it is even more difficult to part with money for already expensive insurance ... Truth is hurtful.

An accident happened

That's that, it happened, BUT WHY WITH ME??? No time for emotions, time to report the accident to the Insurance Company. And this is where the nerves begin. Regardless of the incident, be it an accident, theft or fire, according to the Insurance Company scenario, you first have to answer a number of questions, the purpose of which is to clarify the details you stated when you took out your insurance policy. Below are some of the most common questions you may encounter.

  1. Address of actual residence and the address of registration of the car (according to the logic of the Insurance Company, they must match)
  2. Your age (of course, they will ask for your date of birth, but they will calculate your age))
  3. Your license
  4. Information about previous accidents (even if you do not remember about them, the Insurance Company know about it, as it has access to this information)
  5. Information about fines and violations of the speed limit (even if offense was admitted just last month, the Insurance Company has the opportunity to obtain this information)
  6. Confirmation NCB / NCD - discounts that you used when taking out insurance (you may be asked to send a confirmation)
  7. Information about who is the actual owner of the car and who is indicated in the vehicle registration documents (V5)

Already at this stage, if the answers do not coincide with the information stated by you earlier, the Insurance Company may CANCEL or VOID your policy. Please note you have not even told the details of the accident.

After overcoming this mountain of questions, YOUR TIME begins. Regardless of who is to blame for the accident. You have regularly paid insurance premiums for years, you were a neat driver, but it happened and now...

  • My car required recovery!
  • Repair!
  • I need a courtesy car while my car is being repaired!
  • Not economical to repair? Pay me market value for my vehicle!
  • And further under the contract (it is advisable to re-read)

It is not worth showing shyness at the moment, everything that is spelt out in the contract is yours, and you paid for it.

IT IS IMPORTANT!

An obligatory part of any insurance when applying for damages is the payment of an additional fee (Excess). The fee can be different, in practice from £100 to £3000, and you can easily find it in your insurance documents. A little knowledge of math is needed here. Check the appropriateness of filing a claim if you are to blame for the accident. If your car is damaged due to the fault of another driver, the fee will be refunded to you (but sometimes you need to remind to Insurance Company about it), or it will not be charged at all.
