Accident - it happens
Accidents on British roads are a frustrating but integral part of everyday life for many drivers. With heavy traffic, specific road features such as roundabouts, narrow roads, and sometimes missing road markings, it's not surprising that accidents happen fairly often. However, just as important as preventing accidents, is dealing with the aftermath when an accident has already occurred. This is where insurance companies and their employees come into play, whose duties include determining who is responsible for the accident.
Are you guys even listening to me? It's not my fault!
At the core of this procedure is an employee of an insurance company, who usually works in a modern office equipped with everything necessary to analyse the details of the accident. They review the evidence presented by those involved in the accident, witness statements, expert reports and other information available to assess the case.
While these professionals usually have considerable experience under their belt, the decisions sometimes seem oversimplified, templatised, and somehow incorrect. So, what's the problem with this?
50/50
It becomes especially evident in cases where the accident occurred while changing lanes or at roundabouts. Insurance companies find these cases to be the most complex and time-consuming due to the lack of clarity in the surrounding circumstances. Based on my experience working as a claims handler, the vast majority of these cases are decided on a 50/50 basis ("split liability"). The reason for this approach is that both parties are typically unable to present conclusive evidence to prove their full innocence.
About gentlemen
Gentlemen should definitely be taken at their word, but apparently, they are becoming increasingly fewer in number. You should not count on the at-fault party not challenging their guilt. In most cases, the at fault driver will try to shift the blame on you, and that's where you need your loyal friend - the dashcam. In circumstances where your word may be questioned, a video recording will become an irrefutable argument.
A dashcam is essential for your peace of mind
Dashcams are easy to use, require no special skills for installation nor regular maintenance. They are just there for you! And if you don't have one, then reread this article and purchase one. It is quite possible that some of you are now thinking about a gift - believe me, if you give a loved one a dashcam you won’t be wrong, except when they already have one).
